Tether Introduces Scudo, Redefining Fractional Gold Ownership On-Chain

Tether has officially introduced Scudo, a new unit of account designed to simplify on-chain gold ownership and usage. Scudo represents one-thousandth of a troy ounce of gold, eliminating the need to handle long decimal fractions when transacting with digital gold.

The launch addresses a long-standing challenge in using gold as a digital asset, particularly around pricing clarity and small-value transfers. Through Scudo, Tether aims to make gold not only a store of value, but also a more practical medium for everyday on-chain transactions within the blockchain ecosystem.

Scudo is built on top of Tether Gold (XAU₮), which remains fully backed by physical gold. While the unit is smaller and more user-friendly, the underlying guarantees—asset backing, transparency, and on-chain verification—remain unchanged. The concept mirrors how smaller units like satoshis have helped drive broader adoption in the crypto space.

According to Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino, Scudo is intended to lower the barrier to entry for gold ownership, enabling users worldwide to hold and transact even tiny fractions of gold. This initiative aligns with Tether’s broader vision of modernizing access to traditional assets through blockchain technology and expanding the role of tokenized gold in the global digital economy.
