Meta has officially introduced Facebook Verified, a new free verification badge designed to confirm that a profile belongs to a real person. Unlike the existing paid Meta Verified subscription, this new badge is available at no cost and uses a simple selfie-based verification process. The initiative aims to help users identify authentic accounts as AI-generated content, fake profiles, and scams become increasingly common across social media.
The verification process requires users to record a short video selfie, which Facebook compares with their existing profile photos to confirm their identity. Eligible users must be at least 18 years old, maintain a good standing under Meta’s Community Standards, and show no signs of fraudulent or inauthentic behavior. At launch, Facebook Verified is available only for personal profiles and is not supported for Facebook Pages or Professional Mode accounts.
Once verified, the badge will appear in key areas across the platform, including Marketplace, Facebook Dating, Groups, and user profiles. Meta also plans to expand the badge to Feed posts in the future. The company emphasized that users only need to complete the verification process once, after which the badge will automatically appear wherever it is supported on Facebook.
Meta clarified that the Facebook Verified badge simply confirms that an account belongs to a real person who has completed the verification process and meets the platform’s trust and safety requirements. It does not indicate that Facebook endorses the user or guarantees their trustworthiness. The feature is being rolled out gradually in selected markets before expanding globally, with the goal of making interactions on Facebook safer and more transparent in the age of artificial intelligence.
