YouTube is tightening its monetization requirements, with the required watch time for new creators set to increase from 4,000 hours to 8,000 qualified watch hours. The change is part of an update to the YouTube Partner Program (YPP), reflecting the platform’s efforts to strengthen its monetization system and ensure that creators meet higher engagement thresholds before becoming eligible for certain revenue-sharing opportunities.
The new requirement is expected to make monetization more challenging for creators who are just starting out. In addition to the 8,000 qualified watch hours within the previous 365 days, creators can also qualify through 20 million qualified Shorts views within 90 days. However, the change does not mean that every existing YPP creator will suddenly need to reach 8,000 hours.
According to Google’s announcement, the new threshold specifically applies to creators seeking to qualify for advertising and YouTube Premium revenue sharing under the updated rules.
YouTube is also introducing additional opportunities for creators to generate income beyond traditional advertising. These include revenue from YouTube Premium Lite, changes to Shorts revenue sharing, YouTube Shopping opportunities, and new programs designed to connect creators with brands. The platform says these changes are intended to give creators more ways to build sustainable income while continuing to grow their audiences.
For creators, the updated requirements mean that building consistent viewership and audience engagement will become even more important. While reaching 8,000 qualified watch hours may be significantly more difficult than the previous 4,000-hour threshold, YouTube is simultaneously expanding other monetization opportunities. The changes are scheduled to take effect on February 1, 2027, giving creators time to understand the new system and adjust their content strategies.
