Metaverse ‘Shutting Down’? Meta Removes Horizon Worlds from VR

Meta is making another bold move in 2026 by reshaping its virtual ecosystem. In a surprising shift, the company has decided to separate its VR experience from the Horizon platform. As a result, Horizon Worlds—once a key part of the metaverse experience on Quest—will no longer be available in VR and will transition entirely to mobile.

These changes will roll out gradually. Starting at the end of March 2026, Horizon Worlds will disappear from the Quest Store, along with several popular worlds that will be removed even earlier. Users will still have access to other worlds until mid-June, after which Horizon Worlds will be completely removed from VR. Going forward, the Horizon experience will only be accessible through the mobile app, which has been optimized for that platform.

Meta is also restructuring its Hyperscape Capture feature by moving it into a separate application. While users can still create content, social features such as sharing and co-experiencing will no longer be supported. This signals a clear shift in Meta’s priorities, focusing on streamlining the user experience and cutting back on non-essential features.

On the subscription side, Meta Horizon Plus is also seeing changes. Horizon-specific perks like virtual credits and digital items will be removed, although core benefits such as monthly games will remain. Despite these updates, Meta continues to invest in new features for Quest, reinforcing its commitment to improving the VR experience—just no longer centered around Horizon Worlds.
