The Stellar network is taking another significant step forward with the announcement of Protocol 25, known as X-Ray, an upgrade designed to expand privacy-focused and advanced cryptographic capabilities. This release aims to equip developers with new tools to build applications that protect sensitive user data while preserving the open and transparent nature that defines the Stellar blockchain.
At the core of X-Ray is native support for zero-knowledge (ZK) cryptography, enabling applications to verify information without revealing the underlying data itself. This approach allows Stellar-based applications to strike a balance between privacy and trust, making it especially relevant for use cases that demand confidentiality while still requiring public verification and regulatory compliance.
The protocol upgrade also brings compatibility with widely used cryptographic primitives such as the BN254 elliptic curve and the Poseidon hash function. These components are already common across many ZK ecosystems, meaning developers can more easily port existing projects or create new ones on Stellar without rebuilding their cryptographic foundations from scratch.
Once approved through network voting and activated on mainnet, X-Ray is expected to lay the groundwork for a new generation of applications on Stellar. From privacy-aware financial services to asset tokenization and advanced DeFi solutions, this upgrade positions Stellar not only as a fast and efficient payment network, but also as a serious platform for sophisticated, next-generation blockchain use cases.
